Hastings’ Channel 4 bid

Client:
Hastings Borough Council via Locate East Sussex

Beth produced Hastings’ bid, designed by Claire Warner Studio, to host a new creative hub for Channel 4.

BAFTA winner and Hastings resident, director David Caffrey (Peaky Blinders, Line of Duty) championed the bid for Hastings to be a new regional creative hub for Channel 4 (banner image above by Caitlin Lock).

When Channel 4 announced it was moving most of its operations out of London and to bring investments to the regions, it invited towns and cities across the UK to develop place-based marketing bids to host one of its three new bases. Beth was commissioned to produce the creative bid on behalf of Hastings Borough Council through Locate East Sussex.

Working closely with the council’s Economic Development Team, Beth led the production of the marketing bid document entitled ‘Bringing Television Home’, which references Hastings’ heritage as the birthplace of modern television.

More than 30 towns and cities submitted their marketing proposals to the national broadcaster, with Hastings very much the underdog from the start due to its size. Alas, the winning cities were Bristol and Glasgow.

However, Hastings’ bid shone a spotlight on the town’s creative community, lifestyle and talent. Channel 4 said the Hastings submission had given “a much deeper understanding of the creative community in Hastings.”

“A fantastic bid, it really stood out from the others.”
